Volver Discussion by Renee Williams

Volver in translation to English literally means "to return". Who was returning? Well, I believe that would include all the major female characters of this film but also, it evolves around sisters who live in Madrid (Raimunda and Sole) and "the return" of their mother, Irene. Secrets become revealed and old emotional wounds are opened...... but before the film is over, the healing process has begun for all the women. You could say ghosts/superstition helped them survive and become strong.

This film slowly unfolds pasts full of pain for Raimunda and her mother Irene. Raimunda was molested and became pregnant from her father. After Irene found out from her sister, Aunt Paula, that her husband molested their daughter Raimunda. Irene went to confront him but found her husband and Augistina's mother (neighbor) in bed with each other...She murdered both of them by burning down the hut they were in. Nothing was left but ashes. After the murders, Irene vanished from the small village of La Mancha and became a ghosts to family and friends. This tragic past had left many questions, especially for Augistina. Her mother disappeared the day Raimunda's parents were killed in the burning hut. Augistina knew of the affairs and struggled with the question of her mother's disappearance/death. Even when she was diagnosed with cancer Augistina could not let go until she knew what happened to her mother. Sole (short for soledad, loneliness) was abandoned by her husband who left her. She was able to make a living by becoming a hairdresser. She was able to transform her apartment into a beauty shop so she could survive. Paula (Raimunda's daughter) was strong enough to stand up to her step-father who was attempting to rape her. Circumstances unforeseen....Paula was holding a knife at the time of the attack for protection and threat. Her father/step-father came after her and ran into the blade. When Raimunda came home from working Paula showed her the body and they worked together to get rid of him. From all these tragic happenings you can see that this film was is a tribute to women and their resilience in the face of life's most outrageous tribulations.

Once again death is a strong aspect of this cultures life. In the beginning of this film you can see that death is celebrated and treasured by witnessing all the women of the village cleaning and tending to all the grave sites. At the wake of Aunt Paula, you can see the tension between the superstitious beliefs and the real life aspects when Agustina tells the story of how she was alerted of Aunt Paula's death. Also at the end of this film when Agustina is diagnosed with cancer she is home alone to take care of herself. Irene shows herself to help and care for her. Agustina immediately believes that Irene is a ghost and accepts her help without question.

  1. I think this film did a very good job at showing how strong women are. In the face of many tragedies all the women stood their ground and fought their way through the situation. In the end we see that the women are happy to have each other and gain strength from one another. I was always told by my mother that we women need to stick together. I think they did a very good job of that in the end. I was so excited to see those men who are always hurting women to get what they deserved in the end.

  2. I really felt sorry for Augustina. She needed to find out about her mother and was suffering from the cancer. I was so glad when Irene crossed the windy road and went to help her. I am not sure where Irene got her nursing abilities from, but she certainly seemed to be good at taking care of people. She took care of Aunt Paula with her failing mind, and seemed quite comfortable asking Augustine where the syringe and medicine were. I was glad she was able to tell Augustine about her mother, jsut sorry there was such a sordid affair.

  3. Renee, I agree this film is based on death and the respect shown for the dead. I also agree that the return was seen in every woman character in the film. First, Irene returning from the "dead", the return of the two sisters, Raimunda and Sole's relationship. And the return of the broken relationship between Raimunda and her mother. What a terrible tragedy it would have been if the two had died with that living grief. Also Raimunda had sung a song for the first time in years. This was obviously a love that she had not visited for a long time. Even her daughter had never heard her sing. The joy she and her mother displayed during the singing was touching. I enjoyed this film.
Thank you for you blog, see you in class.

  10. I agree with your comment that death is a strong aspect of Hispanic culture. I thought that these women in the film were almost embracing it as a part of everyday life. I find it to be amazing to have the thought that a death is a continuum of life.
I also applaud these wonderful women in the film for being so strong and courageous. All the things that happen to each of them… you would think one of them would be sulking about her life or be maybe just a little bit depressed….nope, they take it as a part of their lives and just move on. They understand the power they form when they are together and that relationship is so deep. Even the women that live in the neighborhood, when asked to give up their food because Raimunda was catering the lunch for the film crew that was in town, do not hesitate. They are so quick to help another woman out. I do not know what the girl who helped Raimunda dispose of Pedro’s body was thinking, but I want that woman to be my friend! My husband is safe (for nowJ), but what loyalty to a friend. She helped Raimunda as if that is something anyone would expect from another woman. I was amazed at the relationship between all these women.

  12. I agree I really liked this film I liked the fact that Raimunda without question or hesitation took her daughters side and did what had to be done to protect her child. These were strong women who were able to survive and thrive on their own. The superstitions continued throughout the movie. Ghosts were looked upon as a normal occurence.Thats why the sightings of Irene in her village didnt seem unusual. Cleaning/caring for the grave sites was very important to the women it was the belief that a loved one never really dies.It was also a belief that strong winds could drive you crazy. I agree with you that ghosts/superstitions helped the women survive and become strong. Lisa Gallagher

  13. I never even thought to mention how Sole's husband left her and she began doign hair in order to support herself. Agustina knowing about the affair with Sole's dad and her mother was another aspect that I had not thought to touch on when speaking on the resilience that these women had and were ale to manage to go on with their lives. Those were really good points, nice post. The story about the door of Aunt Paula's house opening once she died was another good example of superstition that I had not thought of either.

  15. After reading a lot of posts I think we are all in agreement that these women did what they had too to survive. They all developed an even stronger bond as family and like I have mentioned in another post response the family had "returned" and they were all together again. In the end they all had each other to depend on. Maybe it was the supersticious beliefs that made them a little closer - who knows? Bottom line, they were all happy in the end and what strife there was has passed. They can move on and live as family again.
